wanna get some coffee?

when I was in college around junior year, younger girls would always want to hang out with me, and it would often turn into going out on a coffee date. honestly, I don’t know how I didn’t go broke, but every week I'd have 2-3 of these dates from junior year through my first year of my master's (I went straight from undergrad to my master's right before COVID hit).

it was a beautiful time! I got to know them, and they got to know me. they would tell me about their challenges, what they were most excited about, their dreams, and where I could help and partner with them in prayer. Then COVID hit, and I was completely burned out! between studying, working 3 jobs on campus and off, and meeting with these girls, I had been running on fumes. COVID, for me, was a blessing in disguise. it taught me about boundaries, that not everyone wants to be helped, and how to redirect girls who wanted to use the time and space created for an emotional dump rather than growth and flourishing.

anyways, 5 years have passed since the start of COVID, and I miss coffee dates! I miss meeting new people and connecting with them – hence the need for our first coffee date!

so with that- welcome to our v. first coffee date, it’s a pleasure to meet you, i guess in order to start you’ve got to learn a little bit more about me :)

my name is Mutanu (moo-tah-new) just how it’s spelled! it’s origin comes from my dad’s tribe in Kenya & it means joy!

First gen American here! If you are too, let me know! We go through a different kind of struggle no one else seems to know about us… especially first born daughters of immigrant parents, iykyk.

occupation: I work as a consultant, meaning I wear MANY hats and play different roles (maybe I’ll share more later) at one of the largest automotive companies in the States & do some freelance work here & there.

while the rest of my team show up in jeans & leggings everyday I will always look my best

I’m neither a cat or dog gal, sorry not sorry (I’ll enjoy your pets from afar but not up close! please!!)

things I love: my apartment, Kenya, traveling (more on this later), music, and hanging out with my friends & family.

on my way to Nigeria for the first time!

I went to 4 different elementary schools in 3 different cities :) talk about learning to be an extrovert & getting along with everyone!

why a blog? & now… really? since I was 16, i’ve had the desire to have a blog & i’ve always made up a reason why I shouldn’t & can’t do it. Last year was my year of YES for experiences. going into 2024 I told myself this would be the year of saying YES to empowering & bettering myself in every way & this is one of the very first things that came to mind! So here we are, & thank you for staying this long :)

i’d love to hear from you and if this resonated with you, what are you saying YES to this year?

see you next week for our next coffee date :)

-xoxo
